Will Cross shot a 2-over 74 to take second place overall and the San Benito Haybalers finished seventh as a team when they compiled a 341 in the 2010 Atwater Invitational at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club on Monday.
It was the first 18-hole event San Benito has competed in this season, and its 341 positioned it in a tie for seventh place with Downey. The Balers defeated 12 other teams at the event, including Central Coast Section foes Salinas (18th, 392) and Watsonville (20th, 432).
Sonora earned the team title when it recorded a score of 332 and edged Granada (332) in the tie-breaker, while Moreau Catholic (333), Turlock (335), Davis (336) and Enochs (336) rounded out the top five teams.
Cross’ 74, meanwhile, was just a stroke short of medalist honors. Granada’s Kenny Maroney carded a 1-over 73 to earn the individual title, while Daniel Corvig of Johansen and Blake Ramos of Moreau Catholic each compiled 74s to finish in a three-way tie for second place.
San Benito’s Nathan Winn recorded an 85 which positioned him in a tie for 28th place, while teammate Taylor Weatherly shot an 89 and finished in a tie for 42nd place.
Dalton Destefanis sat tied for 62nd place through 18 holes when he compiled a 93, which rounded out the Balers’ scoring. Jacob DeLeon also carded a 97, placing him in a tie for 80th.
San Benito will return to the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club on Thursday when it will host North Salinas at 3 p.m.
