The San Benito High girls golf team posted one of its lowest scores of the season on Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister, and nearly defeated a powerhouse Stevenson team in the process.

Recording a 189, the Lady Balers fell just two strokes short of Stevenson, which carded a 187 to hold off San Benito in a three-team dual meet. Pacific Grove was third with a 205.

The 189 was San Benito’s lowest score since Sept. 17, when the Lady Balers compiled a 183 in a convincing win over visiting Watsonville.

But it was the two-stroke difference San Benito head coach Chris Branon was pleased to see. The Lady Balers have never defeated Stevenson or Santa Catalina during the last five years under Branon, but Thursday’s 189 was certainly a step in the right direction.

“Home-course advantage? Sure it is,” Branon said. “But the focus and the swings are coming.

“I think the momentum is going in the right direction.”

And after several meets where the Lady Balers were carding scores in the 50s, the team returned to the 40s on Thursday, led by Yumi Kimura’s 45.

Nicole Rianda followed with a 47 and Jordan Davies compiled a 48 on the par-36 “Original Back Nine” at Ridgemark, which includes holes 1-6 and 16-18 of the Diablo Course.

LaShea Dailey, meanwhile, rounded out the scoring for San Benito with a 49, while Alexis Sanchez shot a 52 and Jenny Glosser recorded a 53.

“We’re getting into the 40s,” Branon said. ” It’s a good time to get the momentum. I think we’re falling into it at the right time.”

Pacific Grove’s Hayley Andreas medaled the round with a 36.

San Benito has just three matches left. On Wednesday, the Lady Balers edged Live Oak 202-205 at Corde Valle Golf Club in San Martin.

While Live Oak’s Paige Flores medaled the front nine par-36 with a 48, San Benito’s Jenny Glosser nearly equaled the low score with a 49.

Lady Balers Dailey and Davies each recorded matching 50s, while Nicole Rianda rounded out the scoring for San Benito with a 53.

Kimura and Sanchez carded a 56 and 59, respectively.

San Benito will return to the course on Monday when it will visit the Corral De Tierra Country Club to take on Salinas. Tee time is 3 p.m.
