A day after struggling in an 18-hole tournament, San Benito’s Darrel Aton returned to form Tuesday.

He shot a two-over par 39 on the front nine at Ridgemark’s Diablo course to help the Haybalers to a 214-217 win over Monterey.

“That course got him (Monday), but I think he was really ready to have another go-round,” San Benito coach Andy Parra said of Aton, who shot a round of 96 in Monday’s Atwater Tournament at Stevenson Ranch.

The ‘Balers finished in the middle of the pack of that tournament, shooting 359 as a team on the par-72 course.

Robbie Sanchez and Joey Amaral were the top finishers, carding scores of 88. Nolan Filice was right behind at 89.

Back home in Hollister on Tuesday, Aton reverted to his form and the rest of the team followed suit. Chad Stanger shot 40, Felice shot 43, Sanchez scored a 45 and Josh Greenwood and Amaral both had 47s.

“I think the kids are playing better, I think we’re peaking at the right time,” Parra said. “Hopefully, we’ll make a strong push at the league finals. If we don’t qualify for (Central Coast Section) as a team, hopefully we’ll get a couple individuals in there.”

The ‘Balers will take on Sobrato at Cinnabar Hills on April 10 and resume Tri-County Athletic League play April 19 when they host a league tournament at Ridgemark.

San Benito couldn’t match the talent of Monterey and fell to the first-place Toreadors on the road Monday 25-13, 25-18, 25-16.

Monterey, which is unbeaten in Tri-County Athletic League play at 7-0 and 16-8 overall, took control with a strong first game and the ‘Balers (5-7, 4-3 TCAL) didn’t have enough to make a comeback.

“They are the team, they’re undefeated,” San Benito coach Luis Espinoza said. “The second game I thought we played well, but we made more mistakes than they did. We played hard, but they more arsenal than we did.”

Erik Rodriguez led the team with five kills. Sterling WIlson added six blocks, Luis Rosales had 10 assists and David De La Cruz had eight digs.

The ‘Balers begin the second half of the TCAL season when they host Gilroy at 6:30pm April 12.

“The second part of the season comes next week against Gilroy and I think we’ll be turning some heads again,” Espinoza said.
