Gunfire came close to officers and a deputy investigating a suspected fight Tuesday night in a McCray Street supermarket parking lot, the Hollister Police Department reported.

Officers responded at 8:45 p.m. to a call of a fight outside of Save Mart, 291 McCray St., said officer Rosie Betanio, department spokeswoman. While near the parking lot entrance on Third Street, officers heard four or five gunshots, including one that ricocheted in the area where they were standing, Betanio said.

After ducking for cover, a police sergeant, an officer and a deputy ordered employees and shoppers back into Save Mart, Betanio said.

Betanio said investigators believe the shots came from the direction of San Benito and Third streets, west of the parking lot.

Police collected evidence, but Betanio would not disclose what items were found.

The department does not believe the officers were targeted.

There are no suspects, and the shooting remains under investigation today, Betanio said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Hollister Police Department at 636-4330.
