San Juan Bautista – Of Marissa Gutierrez’s score of 38 on the back nine of the San Juan Oaks course on Tuesday, San Benito High head coach Chris Branon had only four words.

“Hey, I’d take that.”

Out of the five teams and thirty athletes competing in group play on Tuesday, it was Gutierrez who paced the field. Starting out on the par three 12th hole, Gutierrez’s first shot was right on target less than 15 feet away from the pin. She wasn’t able to get the birdie on 12 but managed to come in at just under par on two other holes.

Marissa really showed her true colors out there today,” Branon said. “She played a heck of a game of golf.”

Gutierrez’s 38 was by far the day’s low score. Gilroy’s Kristen Campos had a solid day on the course as well, firing a 43 to lead the Mustangs to a second place finish as a team with a final score of 201, only three off of Hollister’s first place score of 198.

But Gutierrez wasn’t Hollister’s lone bright spot on Tuesday. In fact, all six ‘Balers who took to the links at San Juan Oaks had solid performances. Amanda Frey, playing nine holes competitively for only the second time ever, fired a 63. Danielle Shelton shot a 58, number two Erika Bardo shot a 50 and Katie O’Brien turned in a score of 52.

“Katie O’Brien really came through for us today,” Branon said. “A 52 from her is huge and we really needed it.”

The inclement weather on Tuesday may have made things a little tougher than usual but, seeing as how the Haybalers have another challenging day on the links in front of them when they play at Spyglass on Thursday, the difficult conditions may have been a blessing in disguise.

“By far, Spyglass is probably one of the area’s toughest courses,” Branon said. “It almost makes Pebble (Beach) look easy.”

Stevenson is the opponent for Thursday’s action at Spyglass. The Haybalers are back in Hollister for league play on September 29 to face Salinas at Ridgemark.
