Gilroy resident Harold J. Packard died Saturday, May 3, 2003 in San Jose after a lengthy illness. He was 84.

Mr. Packard was born in San Francisco and raised in Los Gatos. He graduated from Los Gatos High School and San Jose State University and served in the U.S. Coast Guard (Merchant Marine) from 1941 to 1945. He moved to Gilroy in 1966 and worked for State Farm Insurance as a claims adjuster for 25 years.

He spent many hours on his ham radio – his call sign was WA6YJU – and was a member of the Garlic Valley Amateur Radio Club of Gilroy. He also enjoyed doing all the family shopping.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, June R. Packard of Gilroy; his daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Don Christopher of Gilroy, Scherrie and Rick Taylor of Union City and Cindy Gallo of Gilroy; his sons, Christopher Packard of Gilroy and Gary Packard of Napa; his sister, Maxine Nelson of Morgan Hill; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Arrangements are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Society or the donor’s favorite charity.
