The Anzar High girls soccer team goes for its third straight win today when the Hawks travel to Greenfield for a Mission Trail Athletic League match.
Anzar, 2-2 in the MTAL and 2-3-1 overall, chalked up 4-0 and 3-0 defeats of Gonzales and Soledad, respectively.
“This team has a lot of potential,” said senior forward Teryn Stone. “We have a lot of people who can score, not just one or two. And we’re just going to get better and better.”
Jesse Martinez, in his second year as head coach, is pleased as punch with his club’s start this year.
“We’re holding our own,” said Martinez. “We have some good young players. The strength of our team is our defense. We have some freshmen playing great on defense.”
Martinez is excited about freshman goalie Wara Wisotsky, who is splitting games with sophomore Lesley Densmore in goal. Both Wisotsky, an up-and-coming cross country runner, and Densmore play up front, as well.
“I have the luxury of having two good goalies who can play forward,” said Martinez. “They’re awesome.”
Rounding out the defense are sweeper Crystal Dudoit, a junior transfer from Mt. Madonna, sophomore stopper Kelsey Stone and defenders Annette Helsley and Sarah Finstad, two freshmen.
In the midfield are sophomore Rachel Martinez, daughter of Jesse, junior Ashley Schmidt and Corina Forson.
Forwards include Teryn Stone, freshman Leanna Nicholson – who headed in goal in the win over Soledad – and sophomore Carmen Morales.
“This team is a lot better than last year,” said Rachel Martinez. “There is a lot of young talent on this team.”
Jesse Martinez likes Santa Catalina as the league favorite. The Hawks opened up league with the Cougars and fell 6-0.
“They’re good,” he said. “They’re always good.”
Martinez feels his club still has some things to work on.
“We need to communicate better,” he said. “We’re still learning to work with each other. But we’re coming along well. We’ll be a contending team next year or the year after.”
Martinez has 20 girls on the roster and plans to field a junior varsity team next year.
The Hawks are home vs. Robert Louis Stevenson Friday at 3:30 p.m.
