KING CITY

After starting the season strong on a 6-3 preseason record, the Anzar girls volleyball team lost their league opener Tuesday night at King City in four games (24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25).

The Hawks are now 6-4 overall, 0-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

Anzar coach Chris Wardlaw said the team’s offense struggled a bit, compiling a hitting percentage of .180. For a team to be successful, Wardlaw added, teams need to be hitting .250 at least.

“Our offense was very weak tonight. There was no one who could put the ball away,” Wardlaw said. “They aced us here and there. We passed it pretty well and we set pretty well.

“We just hit a lot of balls out.”

It was Anzar’s first match since Sept. 9 in a three-game victory at Pacific Collegiate. Wardlaw noted that there was a lull from the downtime of having more than a week in between games.

“And given all that, we still took them to four games in there gym, and they have a really loud gym,” the coach said.

Setter Kerstin Tuning had 30 assists for the Hawks, and Erin Deleissegues supplied 12 kills. Wardlaw also highlighted the play of libero Cristina Medina, who had seven digs.

“She passed unbelievably,” he said.

Anzar will play again Thursday at home in San Juan Bautista to Carmel at 6 p.m.
