Anzar defeated Kirby 52-17 Wednesday in San Juan Bautista
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

They hold a narrow one-game lead on first place and have three games left to play, but the Anzar High girls basketball team sits rather comfortably atop the Coastal Athletic League, nonetheless.

That’s because after their dual victories over Pacific Collegiate and Oakwood last Friday, all that remains for the Hawks is Oakwood, Marina and York, three teams that they’ve already defeated by a combined 162-39 margin earlier this season.

And on Wednesday, the Hawks showed that although the remaining schedule is in their favor, they aren’t laying down by any means.

Led by 10 points from Carly Johnson, Anzar cruised past visiting Georgiana Bruce Kirby 52-17 on Senior Night in San Juan Bautista, where senior Michelle Terrano had two steals and an assist and Liliana Resendez delivered nine points, five steals and pulled down four rebounds.

It was Johnson who delivered perhaps her best game of the season, though. The sophomore guard scored all 10 of her points in the second period, when Anzar outscored Kirby 16-0.

The Hawks led at halftime by a sizable 30-2 margin.

“This game was well in hand at halftime,” Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said.

Although Kirby pocketed 15 of their 17 points in the second half, Anzar countered with 22 of their own.

Alyssa Rodriguez had nine points and teammate Nicole Mello supplied eight for the Hawks, which improve to 8-1 in the CAL, 10-10 overall.

“Day by day,” Netzel said, “we’re preparing for what challenges lie ahead.”

Those challenges include a game at Marina on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

But perhaps more importantly, if the Hawks win-out they will wrap up the CAL crown as well as earn an automatic bid toward the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.
