Anzar girls basketball beats Anchorpoint 76-38, will face
first-place Pacific Collegiate Tuesday
San Juan Bautista
Anzar’s Alyssa Rodriguez scored a season-high 40 points to lead the Hawks past Anchorpoint Christian 76-38 last Tuesday in San Juan Bautista.
Rodriguez, who recently took over as the leading scorer in the Monterey Bay area averaging 24.31 points per game, shot 14 of 23 from the field Tuesday and 4 of 8 from behind the arc.
Carly Johnson added 15 points for Anzar, which improved to 7-1 in the Coastal Athletic League, while Liliana Resendez had 11.
Of course, the previous time these two teams met up, Anchorpoint lost a 74-54 decision. While holding the Warriors to just 38 points on Tuesday, Hawks coach Aaron Netzel called it perhaps the best defensive effort of the season.
“It was pretty encouraging,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to the next couple of games.”
With only one automatic playoff berth for the CAL, Anzar’s next three games will be crucial. Their 7-1 league record puts them a half-game behind first-place Pacific Collegiate, which will finish up their season against Anchorpoint, Anzar and Marina.
The Hawks still have Pacific Collegiate, Santa Cruz Waldorf and York to play. A fourth contest against Marina, which was postponed on Feb. 1, has not been rescheduled yet.
“We’ve got to be really sure to beat these teams,” Netzel said.
On Tuesday, the Hawks will play at Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
