Pebble Beach – It may be suitable to start calling the Anzar Hawks the Cardiac Kids.
The Hawks, for the fourth time in their last five matches, played the maximum five games on Tuesday against Stevenson on the road. Unlike their previous outcome, a loss to Pacific Grove in five games, Anzar reversed the result by defeating RLS in five games 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 16-14.
“We didn’t look very good. We were very inconsistent,” coach Chris Wardlaw said. “But Stevenson is a good team. That’s the best I’ve ever seen them.”
The Hawks improved to 4-2 in the Mission Trails Athletic League and 7-9 overall.
“It took us a long time to get warmed up to our passing and our defense,” Wardlaw said. “However, we came back and won games four and five, which showed a lot of guts.”
Wardlaw said it went the full five games because the Hawks didn’t take advantage of the passing, despite Christina Flores providing 20 kills on the night.
Flores’ 20th kill put an exclamation point to the fifth game, as she “absolutely crushed” the winning point.
“As soon as it happened, I knew we were going to win the match,” Wardlaw said. “She has a knack for finishing big games with big points and big blocks. It’s just weird.”
Aside from her 20 kills, Flores added five digs, while Erin Deleissegues had 14 kills and 35 digs. Setter Kerstin Tuning had 27 assists and seven digs, while senior Allison Lopez had 12 digs.
Next, the Hawks will travel to King City on Thursday for a 6pm match. The Hawks opened their league season against King City at home on Sept. 18 and lost in four games.
“I really think they’re at the same level as a bunch of the teams we’ve played,” Wardlaw said. “We’ve never won at King City. This is our opportunity.”
