The Hawks picked up their first league win of the season in dramatic fashion as Sam Stewart hit the game-winning three with only two ticks left on the clock in overtime to give his team a 63-60 victory.

“They played us man to man and we were able to get our offense going,” said Hawks head coach Ed Cecena. “We got some good back-door cuts, some easy buckets. We played pretty solid basketball.”

Scott Benson led the way for the Hawks with 19 points, Adrian Monroy added 18 and Nick Romero chipped in 12.

The Hawks are now 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League. The team hits the road on Friday for its fourth league matchup of the season against Stevenson at 7pm.

Greenfield 40, Anzar 25

The Anzar girls’ basketball team played well early, but eventually lost its game Wednesday to Greenfield, 40-25.

The Hawks led by five in the first quarter, but the Bruins started hitting their 3s in the second and took an 11-point lead at halftime. Anzar, which was paced by center Jessica Staley (8 pts.), simply wasn’t able to recover.

“Nothing went down,” head coach Paul Lerna said. “We got a lot of shots off, but they just weren’t dropping. We were a little flat.”

Anzar, now 1-3 in MTAL, looks to rebound with a trip to RLS Friday.

Balers 62, Monterey22

The SBHS girls basketball team got a blowout win over Monterey on Wednesday as the team played one of its best games of the season.

Jamie Hall led the way with 16 points while Trisha Lee had 13. Both Crystina Osborne and Jamie Flores had 10 points.

The Balers had a big night on the boards, pulling down 57 rebounds. Osborne and Hall each had 13.

“We took care of the ball very, very well tonight,” said Balers coach Tom Dean, whose team turned the ball over a mere six times in the contest. “We also played extremely good defense tonight.”

San Benito begins league play on Friday at home against Gilroy. Tip off is set for 7pm.

North Salinas 3, SBHS 0

In its Tri-County Athletic League opener, the San Benito High boys soccer team got waylaid on the North Salinas artificial turf, losing 3-0 last night.

According to Haybaler coach Juan Carlos Martinez, his team couldn’t manage to maintain possession of the ball long enough to mount much of an offensive attack against the host Vikings.

“Every time we play on turf they kill us,” Martinez said. (My team doesn’t) know how to control the ball on turf. We were turning the ball over the whole time.”

San Benito fell to 4-4 overall, 0-1 in TCAL, with the loss. The Balers host Salinas on Friday at 3:30pm.
