Late Notre Dame tally dooms San Benito
Hollister – The San Benito girls soccer team dropped a heartbreaker Monday, falling 1-0 to Notre Dame on a questionable goal with four minutes left in the game.
The Spirits put a shot on net and the ball rolled near the goalline as there was a scramble in front of the net and the referees called it a goal.
“I didn’t have a good angle but I thought it was questionable whether it was a goal or not,” coach Mike Schurig said.
The Haybalers (5-3-2, 0-1-1 Tri-County Athletic League) had opportunities, but with Notre Dame keying on freshman leading scorer Sophie Coelho, San Benito couldn’t capitalize and find the net.
“We did not finish well,” Schurig said. “We had some real good shooting opportunities. They keyed in on Sophie and took her out of the game.”
The ‘Balers’ Brittany Henderson had the best chance to score when her shot went off the fingertips of the Notre Dame goalkeeper. Without any San Benito players in position for a rebound, the Spirits were able to clear the ball out to keep the game tied at 0-0 and set up their win.
“The team’s much better than last year,” Schurig said, noting the team has opened league play by playing two of the toughest teams in the league after facing Gilroy on Thursday. “We still have a chance to do something.”
