San Benito started its track and field season on an encouraging note Saturday, taking first place at the Samuelson Co-Ed Relays that it hosted at Leland High.

The Haybalers held the top spot in the four-team meet in both the varsity and frosh-soph divisions, beating out second-place North Monterey County in varsity action and Leland at the frosh-soph level.

“It was just a really solid meet,” coach Iran White said of the meet where San Benito didn’t take worse than second in any event. “It’s really early, but we did well as a team.”

Rigo Vasquez provided San Benito’s highlights in the running competitions, breaking the two-minute mark in his leg of the 4×200 relay. His time of 1:59 was a PR.

“That was a real good time, especially this early,” White said.

Josh Schroeder provided the excitement in the pole vault competition. The returning state qualifier set a meet record by clearing 15-feet, 3 3/4 inches.

“We got what we wanted to get out of this meet,” White said. “We wanted to get some experience for kids that doesn’t have experience and dust off the cobwebs for the returners and I believe we did that.”

San Benito returns to the track Thursday when it will host North Monterey County in a scrimmage before beginning Tri-County Athletic League play next week against Alvarez.
