Hollister – San Benito came out firing on Homecoming Night, using a big first game to propel itself to a three-game sweep of Watsonville in Tri-County Athletic League boys volleyball action.
The Haybalers (10-9, 7-3 TCAL) rolled over the Wildcatz 25-9 in the first game before posting 25-17 and 25-21 victories to close it out.
“We did great in the first game,” coach Luis Espinoza said. “We did what I expected them to do.”
Espinoza mixed up the lineup for the next two games, hoping to get his players some additional experience.
“I was hoping the guys that don’t usually play would do the same things we were doing,” Espinoza said. “Watsonville’s a young team. Sometimes when we play teams not up to our caliber we play down to their level but we didn’t.”
Sterling Wilson continued his strong play with a 15-kill, seven-block effort. Luis Rosales contributed 25 assists, Erik Rodriguez had eight kills and Chris Flippo had five kills and nine digs.
With three straight wins in league play helping the ‘Balers to a tie for second, Espinoza is getting the team focused for a run at the team’s first playoff berth in six years.
“I want the guys to understand what’s at stake and they do,” Espinoza said. “We’re hoping to finish strong and go to the playoffs.”
