Well-known local bartender
Lifelong county resident Hilario J. “Moe” Angulo died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. He was 72.
Mr. Angulo attended San Juan Grammar School and San Benito High School and was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for the Ideal Cement Plant in San Juan for 20 years and Keystone Seed Co. in Hollister for 10 years.
But he was perhaps better known as one of the more “historic” bartenders in Hollister and San Juan Bautista, filling in when help was needed at the Acme Club, the Smoke House and the Brand Club, Hollister bars that no longer exist, and at Johnny’s and the San Benito Hotel in Hollister and Daisy’s and Mom and Pop’s Saloon in San Juan. He was also always willing to help at the VFW Dug Out and the Hollister Elks Lodge.
“Our dad was a people person and enjoyed socializing with people, his friends, and playing a game of cards at any time possible,” his children said.
He was a member of Old Mission San Juan Bautista, the Leslie L. Garrett Post 6359 Veterans of Foreign Wars of San Juan Bautista, BPOE 1436 of Hollister and Hollister VFW Post 9242.
He is survived by his wife, Susie Angulo of Hollister; his children and their spouses, Albert and Tiffany Angulo of Hollister, Patricia and Phillip Bautista and Charlotte and Frank Valadez, all of Gilroy, and Diane and Darryle Capps of Manteca; his brothers and sisters, Poncho Angulo and Isabel Ybarra, both of Hollister, Manuel and Ruben Angulo, both of San Juan Bautista, and Gilbert and Charlie Angulo, both of Los Banos; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Angulo, and his sister, Reyna Navarrez.
Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 8:30 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by memorial services provided by the Hollister Elks Lodge No. 1436 at the funeral home.
Family and friends will leave the funeral home Monday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at Old Mission San Juan Bautista at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the veterans section of San Juan District Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to the Hazel Hawkins Northside Convalescent Hospital Restoration Fund in care of the funeral home.
