Hobby Lobby Stores, a privately held national retail chain of arts and crafts stores, has signed a lease to open a store in Morgan Hill. The 77,200-square-foot retail facility, formerly occupied by Mervyn’s, is located at Cochrane Road and U.S. 101 in the Cochrane Plaza shopping center.

This is Hobby Lobby’s ninth store in California, and is scheduled to open late summer of 2012.

“We opened our first location in Visalia last year, and since then the success and customer reception has been incredible at all of our locations, with numerous requests to open additional locations. Our Victorville store just opened earlier this month, and our Laguna Niguel location is set to open in June,” said John Schumacher, assistant vice president of advertising. “Each new Hobby Lobby location contributes to increased foot traffic, generates sales tax, and adds new jobs that enables us to become an integral part of the community while sharing in the growth of both the city and the state.”

Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK, started as an outgrowth of Greco Products, a miniature picture frames company founded in a garage by David Green in 1970.

Today, Hobby Lobby has more than 500 stores across the nation that average 55,000 square feet in size. This major Oklahoma City-based private corporation offers more than 65,000 crafting and home decor products in its stores. Departments include floral, fabric, needlework, picture framing, baskets, home accents, arts and crafts, wearable art, jewelry and scrapbooking supplies. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and all Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sunday.
