Executive vice president and general manager Doug Wilson announced Friday the San Jose Sharks have re-signed center Logan Couture, 22, to a two-year contract extension.

Couture was second among NHL rookies with 32 goals and points, 56, and first in game-winning shots (eight), power play goals (10) and shots (235) in 2010-11. Overall, Couture’s 32 tallies ranked him tied for 14th in the league.

“Logan is an excellent teammate and he proved it by committing to the team-first philosophy that we have instilled here,” Wilson said in a press release. “Last season, as a rookie, he was a catalyst for our hockey club as one of our most consistent players.”

Couture was selected as the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for December, and also participated in the Honda NHL Superskills competition at the All-Star Game.

In 104 games over the past two season, Couture, who was drafted by the Sharks ninth overall in the 2007 NHL Draft, has collected 65 points (37 goals, 28 assists).)

Playing in 33 postseason games thus far, Couture has 18 points (11, goals, seven assists), and his 11 goals place him tied for 10th on the all-time franchise playoff goals scored list.

“Over the last two postseasons, he has been one of our most reliable players,” Wilson said. “We’re excited to see him build upon his early success and continue his growth over the next three seasons.”
