Dear Editor:

The following is in response to articles and editorials in the Free Lance.

When one takes the politics out and becomes a free-thinker, one will find not everything is being reported in the news media about the state budget/deficit and the recall of (Gov. Gray) Davis.

California’s $38-billion deficit is more than all other states’ deficits combined.

Tax revenues grew 28 percent during Gov. Davis’ first term, well above inflation. But over the same period, the Davis-ran state spending went up 36 percent and hired more than 23,000 new state employees during a hiring freeze.

During Davis’ bid for re-election, he misled the voters by understating the state’s financial well-being. His projected $8-billion deficit had risen to a national record-setting $38.2-billion budget deficit.

It is very doubtful the people in charge of running the state did not know the real projected deficit. And in turn, if they underestimated by $30 billion, that in itself should be enough to kick them all out of office.

The state Legislature passed a $100 billion spending plan which only offers another financial fiasco next year. This budget increases spending by $1.2 billion over last year and will borrow $11 billion.

From a major Bay Area news source, “Budget doesn’t solve problems – Lawmakers haven’t addressed fundamental woes.”

Gov. Davis solely authorized the new vehicle tax which will cost every Californian three times more to register a vehicle each year.

The recall is not a right-wing effort as Davis wants you to believe.

To date, the state Republican Party has not spent one penny toward the recall.

More than 400,000 registered Democrat voters signed the recall Davis petition.

The recall of Davis is supported by Hispanic groups, African-American groups, senior and junior groups, Libertarians, Independents, Democrats, Reform Party members and Republicans.

Gov. Davis says the recall election will cost $35 million, but does not tell you that the state has been going in the hole $30 million every day.

Right now, today, it will cost every California man, woman and child over $1,100 each just to pay the state’s $38-billion deficit and it keeps going up.

It will cost every Californian about $1 each to conduct the recall.

Somewhere, somehow the voters need to hold our runaway spending elected officials responsible for their actions and the state constitution offers the people the recall process for achieving that goal.
