There were no major traffic accidents during the holiday weekend, according to the Hollister/Gilroy Division of the California Highway Patrol.

From Wednesday morning to Sunday evening, there were 28 crashes, down from 32 last year, and the least amount since 2000, said CHP Officer Terry Mayes.

Of the 28 accidents, eight of them were injury collisions, three were drunk-driving related, but none were fatal, she said.

“We scooted through it pretty good,” Mayes said.

DUI arrests increased to 18 from last year’s 11.

“We had the maximum enforcement out and they were in the right place at the right time to get them,” said CHP Officer Teri Neidigh.

Of the 28 crashes, nine occurred on Highway 101 either north or south of Leavesly Road and 10th Street, Mayes said, which is a high-traffic area because of the throngs of people doing holiday shopping.

“Welcome to the outlets,” she said.

Historically, there is at least one fatal during the holiday weekend, but for the past four years fatal accidents have been scarce.

“Knock on wood – we’ve been really lucky,” Mayes said.

Mayes attributes the decrease in accidents to improvements on Highway 25 and people being a little more patient and cognizant of safe-driving techniques.

“It makes a big difference,” she said.
