The Oak Grove Holiday Classic is a 16-team girls tournament in San Jose where hoop teams can show their wares. Hollister High outscored Fremont of Sunnyvale heavily in the first three quarters Monday to coast to a 59-44 victory in round one of the OGHC.

The Balers (7-2) stay in the winner’s bracket and take on Monday’s Los Gatos-Santa Teresa winner on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Gina Caianiello was back on the beam for the Balers, totaling 19 points. Caianiello added five assists, five steals and had just one turnover.

Sarah Groman chipped in 13 points and had six blocks as the Firebirds were limited to perimeter shots. Groman also had six rebounds. Baler guard Trisha Lee survived early foul problems and had 10 points, while Naomi Ruiz had eight points and seven boards for the Balers.

Jennifer Tremblay was a factor on the boards with seven rebounds to help the Balers’ cause.

Should Hollister prevail on Wednesday, the Balers could possibly meet El Camino of Sacramento in a tough semifinal on Friday. The championship game is Saturday at 4 p.m.

Palo Alto, which defeated the Balers in the OGHC a year ago, is not in the tourney this year.
