The Hollister School District paid about $146,000 for the June special election that included one parcel tax proposal, according to the San Benito County Elections Office.

The elections office billed the district for that amount and received a payment Thursday, according to the elections office.

Hollister district officials placed the ballot on a special June 7 ballot for voters to consider a $96 parcel tax to pay for programs such as sports, music and libraries in light of a severely dire budget outlook. Voters defeated the measure – which needed two-thirds approval – by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin.

District leaders had estimated the parcel tax, if approved, would raise $1.2 million annually. District officials prior to the election estimated it would cost between $72,000 and $85,000, much less than the final figure of $146,316.53.

Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntyre did not immediately return a phone call.
