MONTEREY – They say that all good things must come to an end. They, whoever they are, are right.

The Hollister High baseball team found its three-game win streak to start the year halted after Thursday’s 7-6 defeat to Monterey in the Coast Classic Tournament.

In a game played at Sollecito Park, home of the Toreadores, the Balers (3-1) had plenty of opportunities to break the game open against ‘Dores ace Joey Parigi.

Parigi couldn’t find the plate from pitch one, walking eight batters and hitting one in five innings worth of work. The sophomore lefty kept bailing himself out, though, by making the right pitch at the right time, striking out four Balers.

Hollister, which had just three hits off Parigi, left 10 runners on base in the first six innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and third frames. Case rested.

The Balers plated two runs in the first. Josh Badillo walked and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Nathan Rowe. Nick Ramos, batting second, popped a bunt down the third base line that went for a base hit. Ramos scored after a walk to Anthony Synegal with the bases juiced.

The Toreadores came right back in the bottom of the first against Baler starter Nathan Rowe (1-1). ‘Dores leadoff hitter John Cardinalli, who went three-for-four, singled to start the inning. Frank Bruno singled. Parigi batted in Cardinalli on a fielder’s choice play, the John Cardinalli singled in Bruno to knot the game 2-2.

The Balers put a 2-spot on the board in the third. Walks to Eric Diaz, Jr. and Gordon Ross to begin the inning eventually led to a bases loaded situation once more for the Balers. P.J. Galvan walked to drive in one run, then Justin Patton singled to right to score Ross.

After the Monterey tied the game with two runs in the fifth, the Balers put two up on the board against reliever Will Garner. Ramos ripped one over the head of John Cardinalli in left, but Ramos slipped rounding first and had to hold with a single. Garner tried to pick Ramos off and the ball went down the right field line with Ramos high-tailing it to third base. Diaz, Jr. singled to center to bring Ramos in. After Diaz, Jr. went to second on a fielder’s choice play, Rowe doubled down the left field line to score Diaz, Jr., chasing Warner in the process.

‘Dores reliever Justin Ramirez was the winner when Monterey rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth off Rowe. Parigi, who had three RBI’s on the day, singled in the winning run.

Hollister plays on Saturday as the Coast Classic comes to a conclusion.
