The man suspected of shooting two women – killing one of them – before shooting himself on Diablo Drive on July 11 has been identified as Jose Gerardo Mandujano-Castro, according to the Hollister Police Department.

The man had been using an assumed identity for several years and had a California driver’s license with the name Enrique Rosales Alvarez, according to the statement released Tuesday. Initially after the shootings, the sheriff’s office also released his official identify as Alvarez.

The Hollister department did not release the name of the suspect soon after the crime due to conflicting information about his identity. Police detectives’ follow-up work included the use of the suspect’s fingerprints, interviews with family members and contact with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a statement.

On July 11, Mandujano-Castro walked into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the 1400 block of Diablo Drive. He shot and killed her, Dora Gutierrez, 42, and then shot his ex-girlfriend’s adult daughter, 22, in the abdomen. Soon after, he turned the gun on himself. Both Mandujano-Castro and Gutierrez were pronounced dead at the scene. The adult daughter survived, as did her 5-year-old child who witnessed the incident.

County communications dispatchers had received a 911 call from a woman reporting she had been shot, according to police. The woman said that a man shot her, then shot her mother and himself. Officers from the Hollister Police Department and San Benito County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home and discovered the apartment locked and secured with a metal security door.

Police estimated there were about three to four shots fired and no signs of forced entry. Neighbors had heard screaming and yelling before the shots were fired.

The investigating agency, the Hollister Police Department, has declined a request for audio of the 911 recording from the shootings while citing privacy concerns for the victims. An open records expert has contended the department has no right to deny the request because it is a public document.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to call Detective David Anderson at 636-4330. Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call WeTIP at (800) 78-CRIME.
