KRISTEN TOLLESON – SPECIAL TO THE FREE LANCE
HOLLISTER
Kindergarten registration has started and will continue until the first day of school on Aug. 18.
The first day of registration brought 122 new students, said Jesus Romero, administrative assistant to the superintendent. Romero said the district expects around 543 new students, compared to 596 students for the 2007-08 school year.
The district hopes the turnout will be even higher, he said. Enrollment over the years has declined due to the economy and low birth rate, Romero said.
Parents waiting to sign up their children will have to bring a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, written proof of immunization for Hepatitis B and a second measles vaccination, a Social Security number (if available) and proof of address.
Children have to be age 5 on or before Dec. 2 to be enrolled.
Opening up for the 2008-09 school year is the Accelerated Achievement Academy (grades 3-6) and the Dual Language Academy (K-2).
The Dual Language Academy has a lottery process for enrollment, Romero said. Parents wanting to place their children in the Accelerated Achievement Academy will need their kids to go through a testing process to be accepted, he said.
