Firefighters from the San Benito County Fire Department responded at 10:32 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to a structure fire on the 7000 Block of Lovers Lane.

Firefighters learned that one of the residents, described as a “quick thinking woman” by a press release issued Friday by the fire department, had thrown a bucket of water on the flames to help put them out.

According to the release, there were at least three people in the home at the time of the fire, including two children. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

“Ironically,” reads the release, “after seeing the article in the Free Lance relating to recent fires and smoke detectors, new detectors had been purchased that day but had not yet been installed. The detectors were still in their packages sitting on the floor.”

The press release goes on to suggest that perhaps “the article should have mentioned it is also important to install the detectors.”
