The Anzar High girls basketball played a close first half against Soledad Monday night, but couldn’t deliver the same performance in the second half as the host Aztecs pulled away en route to a 61-25 non-conference victory.

The loss drops the Hawks to 0-6 on the early season.

Anzar has had trouble staying near its opponent in the early going, but on Monday head coach Sam Stewart said the Hawks only trailed Soledad by a 25-15 margin at the break.

“We had a really good first half,” he said. “We weren’t winning, but we were in the game.”

It was the third and fourth quarters when Soledad managed to pull away, however.

“In the second half, we fell asleep,” Stewart said.

Soledad outscored Anzar 36-10 in the second half.

Box scores were not provided at press time.

After playing six games in a week, the Hawks will take a short break from their early season schedule. The team will return to the court on Thursday when it will travel to Lincoln.

Tip-off is 7 p.m.
