Teammate Melissa Weckerle earns first-team nod in CAL as well;
Mark Rania and Andres Gomez lead boys team with first-team
selections

Despite a disappointing finish to the season, the Anzar High girls basketball team did not go unrewarded for its efforts as the Coastal Athletic League recognized two Hawks with year-end honors, including one for the coveted MVP award.
Anzar sophomore Kelsey Robledo was named Most Valuable Player in the CAL, and will share the honor with Anchorpoint Christian senior Adrianna Osuna and Pacific Collegiate sophomore Nisha Ramanujam.
Robledo helped lead Anzar by scoring a league-high 14.67 points per game. In the Hawks’ 18 games played — Anzar went 10-9 overall and 8-2 in the CAL with a forfeit — Robledo deposited double-digit points in 16 games, while also contributing a league-high 108 field goals.
Robledo was also Anzar’s top free-throw shooter.
The sophomore post player wasn’t the only one from Anzar to be recognized, though. Teammate Melissa Weckerle was also named to the first team in the CAL.
Weckerle, a junior point guard who transferred to Anzar from Soquel, was right behind Robledo in scoring with eight points per game. She was also second on Anzar in field goals with 3.11 per game, and second on the team in free throws.
Weckerle had one of her best games when the Hawks hosted Kirby on Senior Night. The junior guard dropped 18 points behind 6 of 11 shooting and added nine steals in the win.
Other CAL selections included Kirby’s Maddy Pasquini, Pacific Collegiate’s Aladrianne Young, Zoe Caras and Holli Silva, and York’s Angela Allen, Ivy Lurz and Krista Brockman.
Coach of the Year was Daniel Kumasaka of Pacific Collegiate, which won the CAL with a 10-1 record.
AHS Boys Basketball
The Anzar High boys basketball team joined the Coastal Athletic League this year and finished runner-up to Pacific Collegiate with a 5-3 record. The Hawks also picked up a pair of all-league selections to boot.
Anzar forwards Mark Rania and Andres Gomez both earned first team selections in the CAL after each averaged double-digit point totals this season.
Gomez led the Hawks with 13.64 points per game and 5.91 field goals per game, while Rania followed with 13.45 points per game and 3.82 field goals.
Rania was also the team’s leader from behind the arc, dropping 1.27 treys a game on average, and was second on the team from the free-throw line.
Anzar compiled a 7-14 overall record.
Pacific Collegiate’s Travis Babcock and Anchorpoint Christian’s Josh Ignagni were named co-Most Valuable Players in the CAL, while Pacific Collegiate’s Bob Rowe was named Coach of the Year.
The Pumas earned the CAL title with an 8-0 record.
Other first team selections included Pacific Collegiate’s Wyatt Tucker and Max Maurier, Kirby’s 
Gabe Best, Anchorpoint Christian’s 
Kenneth Urbanski, Oakwood’s
 Mat Strecter and York’s Daniel Egar.
