SALINAS

Jacob Tonascia had a “breakout” game with a double-double performance, Tyler Rickard deposited the go-ahead 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter, and the San Benito boys’ basketball team staved off any last-minute efforts against host Alisal Friday night when it defeated the Trojans by a 63-56 margin.

Despite leading by one point at halftime, 29-28, the Balers trailed the Trojans by as many as six points in the third quarter. In fact, Alisal led for much of the second half when it outscored San Benito 22-17 in the third quarter after Marc Farfan scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the period.

“We just couldn’t stop the guy,” San Benito head coach Tracy Carpenter said.

But the Balers began to close the gap in the final stanza and took the lead for good when Rickard nailed a 3-pointer with 3:38 to go in regulation.

San Benito outscored Alisal 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

“They were quite inspired and they played really hard,” Carpenter said of the Trojans. “But we ground it out and found a way to win.”

Rickard was tied with a team-high 13 points with teammates Cooper Sepulveda and Jacob Tonascia, who also added 16 rebounds, six on the offensive end, in what Carpenter called a “breakout” performance by the post player.

“He played great. He cleaned up under the boards,” Carpenter added.

Hiram Miskin tallied 10 points for the Balers and both Jordan Belton and Eric Elayda finished with seven points apiece.

The win improves San Benito to 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 8-8 overall, while Alisal drops to 0-3 in the TCAL, 5-9 overall.

San Benito is off until Wednesday, when it will host Salinas at Hollister’s Mattson Gym at 7 p.m.

Earlier this season, the Balers fell to the Cowboys in overtime 60-55 in the championship round of the Condor Christmas Classic on Dec. 29.
