For the second consecutive year the San Benito boys basketball team will enter the league season playing well, as the Balers defeated Watsonville 65-31 in the finale tune up before Friday’s league opener.

Behind 23 points from Jacob Tonascia, San Benito (10-2) rolled through Watsonville (4-7) in the second half to earn the victory.

San Benito led 30-22 at the half before making a second half run. The Balers chanced to a full court press and limited the Wildcatz to no points in the final quarter.

“In the first half we didn’t have our legs under us,” SBHS head coach David Kaplansky said. “That’s why we played this game, we had so many days off. We needed to get our basketball legs under us.”

On offense, the Balers relied on Tonascia and Hyram Miskin, who finished with 13 points.

The Balers open the league season against Monterey at 7 p.m. Friday in Hollister.
