Behind 15 points from Ellie Burley, the San Benito girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the Alisal Winter Jam Tournament on Thursday, beating Aptos 60-22.

The victory was never in doubt for the Balers as they jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the game’s first minute.

“We just got that early lead and the defense they were just great,” SBHS head coach Mitch Burley said. “They just couldn’t get anything going. We were really effective.”

The win was a strong response for the Balers after suffering back-to-back losses, including a 69-17 defeat to Presentation on Tuesday.

“We played much better,” Burley said.

All 11 Balers scored in the contest. Cassandra Barraza added 10 points and Denise Martinez scored six in the victory.

With the win, San Benito will play Salinas in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
