Harker’s ability to break the zone, coupled with Anzar’s poor rebounding, led to a 43-16 Eagles victory on Friday night in non-conference action in San Jose.
Anzar head coach Mike Bonomi said the tone was set on Harker’s first possession, when the Hawks showed a zone defense and kept the Eagles from penetrating inside the perimeter.
But just prior to the shot clock expiring, Harker’s point guard found a crease and drove to the hoop for an easy lay-in.
The Eagles controlled a 13-4 lead after one quarter, 25-6 at halftime.
“That set the tone,” Bonomi added. “But the main thing was our rebounding. The killed us on the offensive boards. We could npt get a defensive rebound.”
Harker outscored Anzar in the second half, 18-10.
Kelsey Robledo led the Hawks with six points, while both Melissa Weckerle and Britteny Doty had four points. Anzar falls to 5-9 overall.
The Hawks will return to Coastal Athletic League play on Wednesday when they will host Pacific Collegiate in San Juan Bautista at 5:30 p.m. Anzar’s only loss in league play has come against the Pumas.
