In the opening game of the Del Mar Tournament on Thursday, the San Benito girls basketball team couldn’t stay with Santa Teresa and fell 58-46.

The loss bumps the Balers (4-6) into the consolation bracket, where they will play Castilleja School of Palo Alto at 12 p.m. Friday.

In the game, San Benito fell behind early, allowing Santa Teresa to run out to an early eight-point cushion. Thanks to a season-high 13 points from Anjelica Collins, the Balers eventually pulled to within four points at the start of the fourth quarter.

Without leading bench scorer Denise Martinez, San Benito recieved strong games from Elizabeth Reikowski (11 points) and Desirae Canela (10 points). Six Balers scored in the loss. The Balers, though, were unable to overcome 27 points from Santa Teresa’s Cassidy Sanders-Curry, who made three 3-pointers in the win.

In the final quarter, Santa Teresa pulled away with 17 points, slashing through the Baler defense. Meanwhile, the Balers were held to a game-low nine points in the quarter.
