Lifelong county resident, cattle rancher, former Supervisor
Lifelong county resident Horace Bacon died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Southside Convalescent Hospital. He was 77.

Mr. Bacon could trace his roots in San Benito County to 1866, when his ancestors arrived in Bear Valley. The son of Clarence and Grace Butterfield, he was a cattle rancher and active in the county through his involvement in the United Methodist Church, as a director with the San Benito County Farm Bureau, the Cattlemen’s Association and Saddle Horse Association, the Land Conservation Commission, the 33rd Agriculture District board, as a trustee with the Bear Valley and Jefferson school districts and on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors as the District 5 (South County) representative from 1961-65.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol, of Paicines and Hollister; his children and their spouses, Jean and John Barrett, Susan and Stephen Tonjes of San Ramon and John and Robbie Bacon of King City; his sisters, Martha Miller of Litchfield and Marian Peel of Ocean Hills; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Alan Bacon, in 1967; his brother, Warren Bacon; and his sister, Barbara Hunt.

Visitation will be Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery.

A reception at the Methodist Church, Fifth and Monterey streets, will follow the commital services.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.
