Hollister – Now that the revised state school budget has been released, Hollister School District’s Board of Trustees are looking at a more finalized budget for next year.

The revision of the January state budget projections was announced by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on May 14. Now that HSD administrators have had a chance to look over the budget, they will be discussing with the board a more finalized outline of the 2007-08 budget.

The May budget revise remains fairly close to the estimate given by the Governor’s office in January, according to the Association of California School Administrators. School administrators analyzed the budget at a workshop on Monday, and will know by tonight’s meeting more about how the state budget will affect the district directly.

The budget proposes a 4.53 percent budget funding increase due to cost of living adjustments – up from the January proposal.

The initial proposal for the budget was met with some hesitation by the district’s administrators, who noted that there was less one-time funding for special programs than the previous year. The revise, however, has a few additional funds for special programs.

Hollister School District’s Director of Business and Operations Jack Bachofer said that overall, the budget would still be tight.

“Now we just need to make sure we’re using the resources we have for the best benefits of our students and our teachers,” Bachofer said.

Administrators have been looking at making some small cuts to prepare for possible budget shortages in the future.

In addition to discussing the district’s budget at Tuesday’s meeting, the board of trustees will be voting on a purchase of three modular classrooms for next school year at Gabilan Hills and Cerra Vista schools.

Two of the proposed classrooms will be at Gabilan Hills, and they will be used for the expansion of the school from a kindergarten through fifth grade campus, to a kindergarten through eighth grade campus.

The cost of the three classrooms is estimated at $200,253.
