Humberto Olivares

Gilroy resident Humberto “Bert” Olivares died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 of cancer at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose. He was 58.

Mr. Olivares was born in Crystal City, Texas and moved to Gilroy with his family in 1948. After his wedding he moved to San Jose where he worked as an auto painter for 25 years, specializing in higher-end automobiles. In his later years he moved back to Gilroy, where he was a member of St. Mary Parish and was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants and, sometimes, the Oakland Raiders.

He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Knottenbelt and Juanita L. Leanos, both of Hollister; his brothers and sisters, Alonso Olivares, Ernesto Olivares, Rudy Olivares, Grace Huebner and Mary Olivares; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonso and Francisca Olivares; and his brother, Art Olivares.

A Vigil service was held Sunday at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Mass was celebrated today at St. Mary Church in Gilroy. Burial followed at St. Mary Cemetery.
