foreclosures, massive personnel layoffs, businesses declaring
bankruptcy, government services being reduced. With this in mind,
San Martin’s Gavilan Hills Unity Church invites South County
residents to an evening of meaningful comedy, a chance to forget
the bad news for a while and lift the spirits by enjoying some
humor.
The news these days is full of gloom and doom: home foreclosures, massive personnel layoffs, businesses declaring bankruptcy, government services being reduced. With this in mind, San Martin’s Gavilan Hills Unity Church invites South County residents to an evening of meaningful comedy, a chance to forget the bad news for a while and lift the spirits by enjoying some humor.
“Comic Intervention for Closet Visionaries and Almost-Manifesters” will be presented at the church, 13805 Monterey Highway, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. This one-woman show has been popular at conferences, church services, parties and other venues. The cost is $20; part of the admission fee will go to community outreach.
The show features Randy Peyser, who believes “that from adversity comes comedy. Relationships, desire for success, pursuit of dreams – all are grist for her comic mill.”
Her material is “interactive and participatory” and she uses amusing props, but audience members are never put on the spot or called out for embarrassment. The show lasts about two hours, with time out for an intermission and refreshments. Tickets may be reserved by calling (831) 524-2293 or are available at the door.
This show has been performed for businesses and churches in California and in other states; audience members can expect comic relief as they discover “what to do when one’s income is trickling slower than an intravenous drip or the crises in one’s life are multiplying faster than rabbits.”
Peyser has been a guest speaker at Gavilan Hills several times, and her spiritual messages have been very powerful, according to Marisa Segovia, a vice president of the congregation. It was decided to invite the community to see her perform because “the laughter caused by her humor can be very healing in these tough times.”
Peyser is a graduate of the University of Connecticut. Besides her comedy career, she is owner of www.authoronestop.com, a publishing consulting firm where she performs “‘book appendectomies,’ to get the book inside you out.”
The former editor-in-chief of a national magazine, Peysor has written for numerous magazines in the United States and Europe, interviewing many famous authors. She is also author of her own book, “The Power of Miracle Thinking.”
Gavilan Hills Church, a new thought community, has a long history of serving South County residents. Founded in 1986, the congregation has held services at several locations in Gilroy and Morgan Hill before moving to their present site in San Martin.
It is now a member of the Association of Unity Churches International. Unity was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, and its world headquarters is located in Unity Village, a 1,400 acre campus about 15 miles from Kansas City, Mo. This site features a conference center, chapel, library, bookstore, school for ministry and offices for the church’s far-flung ministries.
