Two drivers were killed Wednesday night when their cars hit head-on while traveling on Highway 152 east of Gilroy.

Traffic was blocked and re-routed for two hours following the collision on the two-lane highway.

The vehicles crashed into each other about 9:20pm, west of Lovers Lane. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of the people killed were not released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office by press time Thursday, pending notification of the victims’ families.

One victim, a 22-year-old male from El Paso, Texas, was driving alone in a 2004 Ford Ranger.

The second victim, a 72-year-old male from Springville, was driving a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. His passenger, 55-year-old Margaret Phillips of Springville, was airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with a complaint of pain to the leg.

It was reported to the California Highway Patrol that the Ranger was traveling in an erratic manner westbound through Pacheco Pass before the collision occurred. A witness said the Ranger crossed over the double-yellow lines and was traveling in the eastbound lane 200 feet before the crash.

The Ranger was traveling at an unknown rate of speed, and the Grand Cherokee was traveling between 50 and 55 miles per hour when they struck, according to the CHP.

Pacheco Pass Highway was closed for two hours, as the vehicles came to rest blocking both lanes. Traffic was detoured.
