Irene J. “Lovey” Maroney died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at her home in San Ardo. She was 88.

Mrs. Maroney was born in King City and was a long-time resident of Hollister before moving to San Ardo eight years ago. She graduated from San Benito High School and worked as a “floor lady” for Churchill Nut Co. in Hollister for 20 years. Earlier, she and her husband owned and operated H.W. Maroney Crop Service in Hollister, a crop-spraying service that also sold fertilizer.

She was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, San Juan Bautista Parlor and enjoyed gardening, growing and canning fruit, sewing and quilting.

She is survived by her sisters, Lillian Lasseter of Salinas and Henrietta Smith of McCloud; her close friends with whom she spent the last eight years, Bruce and Melvina Dodson of King City, Steven Dodson of San Ardo and Katie Magaraci of Lockwood; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. William “Bill” Maroney in 1975; her brother, Bud Rich; and her sisters, Valla Broadfoot and Frances Smith.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Hollister.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
