Eighth-grader graduates with perfect attendance

While Chiyanne Schneider and her friends were focused on their middle school graduation June 1, the student has another claim to fame. The 14-year-old has never missed a day of school since she started kindergarten.

“It was kind of a family joke,” said her mother, Mandy Schneider. “It wasn’t until she was in fourth grade that we realized it.”

Chiyanne always seemed to get sick Friday afternoons after 5 p.m.

“I felt kinda geeky at first,” Chiyanne said when she realized she never missed school, but now she sees it as a source of pride.

“When you miss a day, you miss out on so much,” Schneider said.

Chiyanne’s younger brother Cordell has a similar record and has not missed a day in the five years since he started elementary school.

Other than her relatively good health, and knack for getting sick only on weekends or school vacations, Chiyanne is a typical kid. Her favorite pass time is spending the night at friends’ houses and talking on her cell phone.

When she starts at San Benito High School next fall, she wants to work with special education students, and continue getting good grades in math and English. And, of course, she said she hopes she won’t have to miss a day of school for the next four years, either.
