Hollister resident Jerry Joseph Steele died Monday, July 28, at the age of 61.

Steele had worked for Kaiser Refractories in Moss Landing and was working for the Monterey Air Pollution District. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member and trustee of the Hollister Lodge, No. 1436. He helped found the United Way of San Benito County. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker, gourmet cook and traveler who loved traveling to Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

He is survived by his wife, Julie A. Steele of Hollister; children Tracy Steele of Seattle and Kari McCully of Coarsegold, Calif.; sister Shirley Billings of San Diego; and grandchildren Tyler, Brianna and Erin McCully. Steele is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be held through Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Crematory. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday, July 31, at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Hollister Elks Lodge members are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 6:45 p.m. to conduct services for Steele.

Donations are preferred to the San Benito County United Way, care of the funeral home.
