Joe Doris, 85, of Salinas, passed away Friday, July 6, 2007 after a short illness. He was born on March 22, 1922 in Cherokee, KS. He was raised in Corona, KS, where he was an outstanding athlete. Joe always referred to Kansas as ” home” and could spin numerous tales of his exploits. In 1940, he moved to Hollister where he worked as a mechanic for the Hollister Canning Co. He moved to “The Alisal” in 1953, where he owned Friendly and Bi-Wise Markets with his brother Mike and Thrifty Market with his son John. After selling his last store, he worked as a butcher for Quality Market. He finished his career as a mechanic for E.B. Stone and Son Fertilizer Co. He prided himself on a fully lined meat case and a production line that operated smoothly. He loved his wife Anita, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, brother, nieces, nephews and his extended family immeasurably. There was never anyone that was not welcome at his table for a good meal and conversation, even the Raider fans. He took joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the Fighting Irish, the 49’ers, his tomatoes and fava beans, and any song he could dance to.
Preceded in death last year by his wife of 60 years, Anita.
