June 25, while returning home from a trip with his son and
daughter-in-law. He was 89.

John W. Spencer died in an automobile accident on Wednesday, June 25, while returning home from a trip with his son and daughter-in-law. He was 89.

A native of Portland, Ore., Spencer was raised in Southern California and attended schools there. In 1938, he married Muriel Goodhart of Long Beach. For many years, Spencer was in business in Gilroy from 1948 to 1966 as owner and operator of Spencer NH3 Service, an agricultural chemical business. From 1966 until his retirement in 1988, he owned and operated Spencer Rental Service with locations in Hollister, Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Woodland, Calif. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to Europe and the Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, who died in 1993, and his son, Gordon Spencer, who died in 1997. Spencer is survived by his children, Susan Spencer of Hollister, and Mark Spencer of Gilroy; daughters-in-law, Patty Spencer and Mary Kay Spencer of Paradise; grandchildren Mary White and her husband Alan, Brian Spencer and his wife Kristin of Paradise and Kristen and Keith Spencer of Gilroy; and great-grandchildren Matthew and Sarah White, and Jacob, Zachary, Luke and Nicholas Spencer, all of Paradise.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, July 12, at the Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.
