Born Nov. 22, 1925, the son of John B. Scherrer

and Helen Ryan Scherrer passed away peacefully

on Nov. 25, 2008. John was a life long resident

of Gilroy and a devoted parishoner of St. Mary’s

Church. His kind and loving nature will be missed by his many friends and family. He leaves his sister Mary Joyce, his brother-in-law William Joyce, his nephew Dr. Brian Joyce, his niece Leslie Joyce Alva and her husband Michael Alva; his grandnieces Kathryn Joyce and Kelly Joyce, his grandniece Olivia Alva and Grandnephew Ryan Alva.

John Graduated from Santa Clara University and finished a fifth year at Oregon State. He enlisted in the Navy in World War II and was wounded in battle off the coast of Japan and received The Purple Heart.

Upon the death of his father, he became the president of the Pieters Wheeler Seed Company. He represented the company throughout the world.

He didn’t slow down after his retirement. He was active in the Gilroy Garlic Festival even when it became difficult to get around.

He was a devoted Elk and currently held the position of treasurer. Also he was a member of the Gilroy Rotary Club and Gilroy American Legion. Friends are invited for a recitation of the Rosary at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy on Sunday, Nov. 30th at 6:30 P.M. Elk services will be held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 12:15 P.M. at the funeral home. Thence to St. Mary’s Church, Gilroy for Mass at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy.
