Dear Editor:

Thank you for the front page coverage in Tuesday’s paper to help save the 4-H program. Our family was devastated to learn of the possibility of losing the 4-H program here in San Benito County.

We have been members of the Fairview 4-H Club for the past three years. 4-H is for the whole family. We have both become project leaders and are very active at the club, county and regional levels. We have seen our children grow and blossom in 4-H.

When we first joined, our youngest daughter, then 6 years old, would not stand and speak in front of our club. Now, at age 9, she is a very confident and poised public speaker. This year, she was a county winner at presentation day and then competed at the regional level. Being a gold medalist there, she was invited to the state competition at U.C. Davis at the end of this month. Wow. What a thrill! The experience and life skills she has learned in 4-H are invaluable. We have all learned so much from the 4-H program. We can not even imagine 4-H not being a part of our life. Our oldest daughter, who is 11 years old, is very involved in leadership and she loves it. She enjoys the planning process and executing all the tasks. Both girls get involved in all the community service projects they can. They have made pillows for the Emmaus House, planted roses at Dunne Park, taken supplies to the animal shelter, food to the Community Pantry, donated Toys for Tots, made blankets for Shriners burn unit, sung Christmas carols at the nursing homes and many, many more things.

We love the 4-H Program and think all of San Benito County benefits from its existence. Please join us in urging the Board of Supervisors to keep 4-H in the budget! Although our children are having the time of their life in 4-H, let’s not lose sight of the fact there are generations of children to come.
