Joseph A. Garcia passed away at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital on Feb. 17 at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Garcia was a native of Faial, Azore Islands who came to California and settled in San Benito County in 1959. Joseph was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church as well as the Portuguese Lodge (IDES) of Hollister. Joseph liked the outdoors especially fishing with his brother Eduino and many friends at Moss Landing, along the Coast of Monterey, as well as San Luis Reservoir.

“He was a very capable fisherman,” his brother said. “He always caught a lot of fish and had patience to help others to learn the art of fishing.”

Joseph was proud of his Portuguese ancestry and enjoyed helping each year at the annual the Portuguese Celebration. He worked for various construction companies such as Granite Construction and White Construction in Watsonville which allowed him to work on the San Felipe Pipeline, the excavation and paving around the Moss Landing PG&E Plant, and building multiple residential buildings in the area. Joseph was the husband of the late Mary P. Garcia who died November 1999.

He was the son of the late Antonio Garcia Amaral and Filomena Garcia.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Eduino and Joan Garcia of Hollister, and Antonio Garcia of Faial, Azore Islands. He is also survived by his nieces and their husbands, Fatima and Vitor Serpa of the Azores, and Karen and Larry Zanoff of Bakersfield; one grand niece and two grand nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday Feb. 21 from noon until 8pm with recitation of the rosary at 7pm at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Family and friends will leave the funeral home Tuesday morning at 9:30am to go to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass Of The Resurrection beginning at 10am.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
