Long-time Hollister resident and owner of Penny Wise Drug Joseph A. Rosati died at his home Tuesday, July 29, after a lengthy illness. He was 83.

Born in Chicago, Rosati came to the San Benito County in 1927. He attended local schools and graduated from the University of Southern California. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Sacred Heart/St. Benedict Catholic churches, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, ICF No. 26, SDES and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and Hollister Elks Lodge. He also served as a foreman on the county’s grand jury, director of the county Chamber of Commerce and director of the Hollister Medical Center. He volunteered his time working on gardening projects at the county juvenile hall.

Rosati was a pharmacist and owner of Penny Wise Drug in Hollister, Mission Pharmacy/Sundries in San Juan Bautista and partner in R&R Pharmacy in Castroville. He retired in 1982.

He enjoyed golfing, dancing, fishing, gardening and visiting friends.

Rosati was preceded in death by brother David Rosati. He is survived by wife Marie Rosati of Hollister; children Joan Rosati, Stephen Rosati and Jeanne Rosati, all of Hollister, and John Rosati of Maryland; sisters Aurelia Bozzo and Carolina Marcus, both of Hollister; sister-in-law Louise Rosati of Hollister; and granddaughters Danielle and Jessica Rosati of Maryland. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends can visit at the Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home Thursday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friends are also invited to the funeral Mass on Thursday, July 31, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Entombment and graveside services will be private on Friday, Aug. 1, at Calvary Cemetery.

Donations are preferred to Sacred Heart School, a Hospice or the Parkinson’s Institute.
