Josephine H. Alvarez, aged 92, passed away Jan. 17 at the Queen Of The Valley Hospital in West Covina.
Mrs. Alvarez was born in Durango, Mexico, and came to California in 1915. She lived in Hollister for 55 years before moving to LaPuente to be with her daughter in March 2001.
She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church of Hollister. Mrs. Alvarez was employed through the Hollister School District in the Foster Grandparent Program for over 20 years. Her personal enjoyment was received being with her family, working in her garden – especially growing her roses, and making porcelain dolls which she enjoyed sharing with others.
She and her husband Epolito M. Alvarez were married February 25, 1930 in Yuma, Arizona and celebrated 46 years of marriage before he passed away March 1976. Together they had six daughters and four sons.
She is survived by her daughters Rebecca Villanueva of Vallejo, Naomi Sonny of Carson City, Nev., Esther Orta of San Jose, and Alice Romero of LaPuente; sons Daniel Alvarez and spouse Maria of Los Banos, David Alvarez of Lincoln; and Joel Gamboa of Hollister. She is also survived by 69 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and other generations.
She was preceded in death by children Rachel Morales, Sara Rivera, and Ruben Alvarez. Josephine is the sister of David Roacho of LaPuente, Concha Lopez of Rialto, and the late Luis Roacho and Sally Lujan.
Visitation will be held at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister on Friday, Jan. 21 from 1 to 8pm with funeral services scheduled at 7pm.
Family and friends will assemble at the mortuary chapel on Saturday morning at 9:30am to leave the mortuary at l0am for graveside services at the IOOF Cemetery at 10:30am.
