Julia Tellez Rios Chavez passed away from a short illness at her residence in Hollister on Nov. 20 at the age of 71 years.

A native of Hildago, Mexico, Mrs. Chavez has been a resident of Hollister for the last 24 years. A homemaker most of her life, Julia was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Jovenes De Antano where she enjoyed assisting others and spending time with her friends. Her personal enjoyments included making Indian Craft items, making ear rings, knitting and cooking. “She was an excellent cook,” said her family, “taking just a ‘pinch of this or a pinch of that’ to make the taste just right. She wasn’t one to write down her recipes.”

Julia is survived by her daughters Maria Avina of Hollister, Celia Gazca of Gilroy, Francisca Avalos of Indio, and Alicia Chavez of Hollister; and her sons Fernando Chavez of Indio, Martin Chavez of Hayward, and the late Jose Chavez. She is survived by 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and many relatives living in Mexico.

Visitation will be today from 10am until 8pm at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St. in Hollister. The rosary will be recited at 7pm this evening at the mortuary chapel. Family and friends will leave the mortuary chapel on Wednesday morning at 9:30am to proceed to Sacred Heart Church for a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
