Julio S. Lucas, Sr. passed away at Hazel Hawkins Memorial
Hospital on Nov. 11 at the age of 93 years.
Julio S. Lucas, Sr. passed away at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital on Nov. 11 at the age of 93 years.
A native of Laoag City in the Philippine Islands, Mr. Lucas has been a San Benito County resident since 1946. Mr. Lucas spent over 32 years working in the Seed Industry, retiring from Keystone Seed in 1974. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and “was very devoted to his faith setting time aside each day to say his prayers,” said his family. He was also a member a member of Teamsters Union Local 287 of San Jose and the Filipino American Association of San Benito County.
For enjoyment, Julio liked dancing. “He was a student of Arthur Murray,” said his family. “He enjoyed the Filipino Christmas Dances, and those ladies in attendance all like to dance with him because he was so light on his feet and knew the right steps.”
He also loved the outdoors and going fishing in the ocean near Moss Landing, clamming, crabbing and gardening. “He had over an acre of fresh vegetables at his home which he shared with anyone who stopped by to visit.” He was a master kite maker and kite flyer, often flying his kites from Park Hill in competitions against other large kites. ” He was a person with a great sense of humor,” said his family and he enjoyed telling stories at every opportunity, especially at the annual Filipino picnics.”
Julio is survived by his spouse Frances who he shared 53 years of happy marriage with; his children Julio Lucas Jr. (spouse Aydee) of Modesto, and Chris Lucas, Gilbert Lucas (spouse Cindy), and Brenda Lucas (Rich Holland) all of Hollister; grandchildren Julio Lucas III (spouse Rachel), Heidi Kratt (spouse Bill) of Texas, Bonnie LaMontane (spouse Michael) of Oregon, Jared Lucas, Matthew Lucas (spouse Jona), Shamara Lucas, and Amanda Holland all of Hollister; great grandchildren Isabel and Abagail Lucas, Alton and Jerrod Cratt, Mercy and Isiah LaMontane, and Alexandra Lucas. He was the last of five brothers and is survived by sister Tina Ranchos of Philippine Islands, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to the recitation of the Rosary Thursday evening Nov. 18 at 7pm at the chapel of the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Family and friends will leave the mortuary chapel on Friday at 9:30am to go to Sacred Heart Church where a mass of Christian Burial will be offered beginning at 10am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
